What Everyone Should Know About Lymphoedema: Raising Awareness in the Community
Increasing awareness of lymphoedema is essential if more people are to receive the support and treatment they need.
That’s why Accelerate CIC was delighted to be invited by the Wandsworth Older People’s Forum to host a recent community event, “What Everyone Should Know About Lymphoedema”, at St Peter’s Church, Battersea, bringing together members of the communityfor an afternoon of learning, discussion and practical advice.
Lymphoedema affects thousands of people across the UK, yet many remain unaware of the condition, its symptoms and the support available. By helping people recognise the signs and understand how the lymphatic system works, community events like this play an important role in improving awareness and encouraging earlier intervention.
Learning About Lymphoedema
The session explored the causes and risk factors associated with lymphoedema, the impact it can have on everyday life and practical ways to support lymphatic health.
Attendees also learned about:
- Recognising the signs and symptoms of lymphoedema
- Treatment and management options
- Skincare and self-management techniques
- The support services available for people living with the condition
The event was led by Beccy Elwell, supported by Shanaz, and combined a specialist presentation with interactive group activities, product demonstrations and practical skincare advice.
Encouraging Questions and Shared Learning
One of the most valuable aspects of the afternoon was the opportunity for participants to ask questions in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Attendees were able to handle lymphoedema management products, discuss concerns with experienced clinicians and volunteers, and share their own experiences with others.
The interactive format encouraged conversation and helped build confidence and understanding around a condition that is still too often under-recognised within healthcare.
Working Together to Raise Awareness
Events like these demonstrate the importance of taking healthcare into local communities, giving people access to trusted information and practical advice before problems become more serious.
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the session as informative, engaging and reassuring.
Accelerate CIC would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success, particularly the members and organisers from the Wandsworth Older People’s Forum for their enthusiasm and participation.
We look forward to continuing to work with local communities to raise awareness of lymphoedema and help ensure more people receive the information and support they need.
At Accelerate CIC, we’re committed not only to delivering specialist clinical care, but also to empowering communities through education, early awareness and practical support.
