Lipoedema: Why “Just Lose Weight” Isn’t the Answer
As part of Legs Matter Week and Lipoedema Awareness Month, Accelerate CIC recently joined colleagues from Legs Matter and Lipoedema UK for a webinar exploring one of the most common – and most frustrating – misconceptions about lipoedema.
For many people living with the condition, the phrase “just lose weight” is all too familiar.
Yet, as the webinar highlighted, lipoedema is a recognised medical condition, not a lifestyle choice.
What is lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic condition that causes an abnormal build-up of fat, typically affecting the legs, hips and sometimes the arms. It almost exclusively affects women and often develops or worsens during periods of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.
Unlike general weight gain, lipoedema causes a disproportionate change in body shape. One of the most recognisable features is that the feet often remain unaffected, creating a distinct difference between the legs and feet.
Many people also experience:
- Pain and tenderness
- Easy bruising
- Swelling that worsens throughout the day
- Reduced mobility
- Feelings of frustration, embarrassment or isolation
“Just Lose Weight” – Why This Message Can Be Harmful
One of the strongest messages from the webinar was that telling someone with lipoedema to simply lose weight is not only inaccurate, but can also be deeply distressing.
Research and clinical experience show that while healthy lifestyle choices remain important for overall wellbeing, diet and exercise alone do not remove lipoedema tissue.
Many people spend years trying different diets and exercise programmes, often blaming themselves when the shape of their legs does not change.
As discussed during the webinar, this can leave people feeling unheard, misunderstood and reluctant to seek further help.
Why Diagnosis Matters
Lipoedema remains under-recognised and is often mistaken for obesity, lymphoedema or simple weight gain.
Diagnosis is based on clinical assessment and careful exclusion of other conditions. There is currently no single blood test or scan that can confirm lipoedema.
This is why specialist assessment is so important.
A correct diagnosis can help people:
- Better understand their symptoms
- Access appropriate support and management strategies
- Improve quality of life
- Avoid unnecessary self-blame
- Make informed decisions about future treatment options
Living Well with Lipoedema
The webinar also highlighted that support for lipoedema extends beyond diagnosis.
Many people benefit from specialist advice around:
- Compression therapy
- Skin care
- Movement and exercise
- Weight management support where appropriate
- Pain management
- Self-management strategies
While there is currently no cure for lipoedema, specialist support can make a significant difference to symptoms, comfort and confidence.

Watch the Webinar
If you missed the live session, you can watch the recording and hear directly from clinicians and people living with lipoedema as they discuss diagnosis, treatment and the realities of living with this often misunderstood condition.
Because understanding lipoedema starts with recognising that it is far more than simply a matter of weight.
I am glad that I was part of the event, even if only to remind women to follow what they feel works for them, to stop trying to fit into boxes offered by society, culture, or others’ expectations, and to try to change the narrative they’ve been telling themselves for years.
