Building confidence to facilitate clinical education

At Accelerate, we know that healthcare professionals don’t just care for patients – they also educate colleagues, lead training, and share their expertise and specialist knowledge within the workplace. Evidence suggests that some health care professionals (HCPs) feel inadequately prepared for their roles as educators and lack formal preparation in the principles of teaching and learning. Knowing the practice area is not the same as teaching it, and successfully leading a course or workshop feels very different to being a practice assessor or supervisor within the clinical environment. The role of the HCP educator is dynamic and requires them to actively engage learners to become competent and caring professionals. That’s why we created the “Introduction to Teaching and Learning for HCPs” course: to help clinicians build confidence, competence, and creativity in their approach to teaching.
Our virtual, 2-day programme is RCN-accredited and designed specifically for registered healthcare professionals looking to enhance their skills – whether they’re delivering ad hoc teaching or running structured education sessions.
But don’t just take our word for it…. “The tools and advice I was looking for – and more.”
One of our recent delegates, a Tissue Viability Nurse responsible for delivering clinical education, shared how the course transformed their teaching approach:
“Although I’m a confident person, designing and delivering teaching on a larger scale was new to me. I found the Accelerate course provided the simple tools and advice I needed to improve my sessions and build my confidence.”
The course combines theory with practical application, focusing on adult learning principles, classroom management, peer learning, and reflective practice. Participants are encouraged to bring their real-world experience into discussions, making the learning experience both personal and interactive.
“The facilitators were engaging, knowledgeable, and kind – offering great information and encouragement throughout.”
From classroom to impact: real changes in practice
This delegate left the course not only inspired, but equipped to make immediate improvements:
“I returned to my role energised. I designed a new short session that’s now part of our Trust’s mandatory training and received excellent feedback from learners. I also re-designed several existing sessions to promote engagement and knowledge retention.”
Some of the key takeaways they highlighted included:
- Framing sessions with clear aims and recaps
- Designing teaching materials which are learner-friendly & visually appealing
- Encouraging reflection and learner involvement
- Varying teaching styles to maintain engagement
- Promoting independent knowledge development
- Using copyright-free resources effectively
“I’d recommend the course to any colleague delivering training in their role.”
